Registered Phlebotomist

A Phlebotomist is a medical professional who is responsible for collecting blood samples on patients in a medical environment such as health screenings, a hospital, commercial laboratory, physician’s office, blood bank, pharmaceutical firm, home health agency, research institution, and public health clinics for analysis or other medical purposes. A Phlebotomist assists other medical workers by focusing entirely on the collection of blood, tissue, and fluid samples.  Phlebotomists draw blood specimens from patients by using finger stick, heel stick and/or venipuncture.   Specially trained phlebotomists collect blood samples from any artery of the wrist or brachial artery in the antecubital area for arterial blood gases test.

In addition to collecting and transporting blood samples, phlebotomists also perform diagnostic procedures and interpret test results; process and analyze specimens with sophisticated laboratory equipment; assemble equipment as required for specific tests or procedures; greet patients and instruct them on specimen collection methods and to allay their fear of procedures; prepare specimen for reference laboratory by using centrifuge to spin blood; inventory and requisition medical laboratory supplies; stock work area as needed; keep work areas clean and orderly; write or use a computer to input test results into patients reports; and distribute reports to other medical workers.

Because Phlebotomists work in a medical environment, they must be familiar with sterilization practices and infection control. Due to the risk of infectious disease, strict guidelines must be adhered to when collecting blood samples from patients.
